Ancestrally, the Chira Valley has been an area of important agricultural production, where the Tallanes, an ethnic group with a matriarchal organization, settled, which gradually was invaded by the Mochicas, Chimú and finally by the Incas. It was in these lands that the Spanish founded the first Spanish city, in this part of America, which they called San Miguel de Tangarara (on July 15, 1532); then the Spanish modified the native agrarian structure, creating the divisions and encomiendas. At the end of the 18th century, on July 8, 1783, under the name of El Príncipe, Bishop Baltasar Jaime Martínez de Compañón y Bufanda founded the city of Sullana. In the colony, the northern part of the country was important, due to the presence of the port of Paita (to which Sullana belonged), as well as the intense commercial activity, being this strategic aspect for its development. At the beginning of the 20th century, Sullana was one of the most important and productive districts of the province of Paita, achieving population growth, economic growth and urban development that rose to the category of province, on November 4, 1911.
