The first settlers and inhabitants of Salazar, were those of the adventure to found this municipality, in pursuit of a road closer to the sea, Captain Alfonso Esteban Rangel and Pedro Alonso de los Hoyos formed a commission to find a route that would lead them to the Maracaibo lake. The second of these expeditionaries discovered the river that bears his name (Pedro Alonso) commonly called Peralonso. This town was founded in 1773 by Calixto Lara and Pedro Santander. In 1784 it was elevated to the status of a parish.
In 1875 it was totally destroyed by the earthquake, being rebuilt on the same site.

Rivers: The Zulia that crosses it from south to north and the Peralonso and the streams La tablona, La Miguera, La Montera, Guaduas, Tonchalá, San Isidro.

Agricultural Production: Rice is followed by coffee, corn, banana, tomato, cocoa, cassava, tobacco and fruits.
Livestock Production: Bovines, goats and poultry.
Mining Production: Coal, clays and limestone.
Industrial Production: Central Termica y Cerámica Andina.
