The São Paulo State Immigration Museum is a public institution located at the headquarters of the defunct Hospedaria dos Imigrantes, in the Mooca neighborhood, in the city of São Paulo, where a large amount of documentation about immigration to Brazil is concentrated at the turn of the century. XIX to XX. For several years the museum was named Immigrant Memorial.

In 1882, an immigrant hostel was installed in the Bom Retiro neighborhood. Small and with constant epidemic problems, the site proved inadequate for its intended purpose. It was decided, then, to build facilities that would meet the reception needs of the large number of foreigners that flocked to São Paulo.

Regarding the ideal place for the construction of the Immigrant Hostel, it appears in the report presented by the provincial government to the provincial Legislative Assembly on February 15, 1886:

"... authorizing the construction of the new building for the Inn, determined that it should be located near the Northern and English railway lines. The terrain of Luz (already acquired) is close only to the second of these lines."

In a report of the Bureau of Public Works, presented on November 15, 1887, it read:

"... the construction of the immigrant housing was started in July of the same year (1886), and on June 7th, next, that is to say 10 ½ months, the following works were already completed:

    Longitudinal wing of the main building measuring 75 meters in length;

    Refectory and dependencies;

    Warehouse station with latrines for men;

    Laundry with tanks and latrines for women.

Delivered on June 19 to the Immigration Inspectorate service, the built part was already able to accommodate about 1200 immigrants. "

The old hostel in contrast to the great buildings of the 21st century.

Text from 1908 reads: "The Immigrant Hostel of the capital of São Paulo, built and inaugurated under the presidency of the Hon. Mr. Conde de Parnaíba, Antonio de Queiroz Telles, in execution of Law No. 56, of March 21, 1885, It is intended to receive immigrants from abroad or from other states of the Union, who, acting in their own country or traveling spontaneously, seek the State of São Paulo, in order to be located in the fields, in the colonial centers or in the industries. The Immigrant Hostel would operate and almost three million people would pass through these facilities in its 91 years of existence.

Today the building houses the São Paulo State Immigration Museum.

Today, the Immigration Museum is one of the most important tourist and cultural points of São Paulo. In addition to housing the entire historical collection of the hostel, it also houses some rooms that tell dramatic facts of history, such as World War II, which eventually caused the disasters of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. It has a small coffee farm, cafeteria, and a Maria Smoke ride. Tour that allows visitors to see what public transport and travel were like at the time. During the ride, you can see several trains and stationary cars that are about to be renovated, to return to operation. Many of these trains are located below the raised part of Radial Leste, and adjacent to the CPTM railway line, which contrasts sharply with trains from the last century.

A piece of this historic building still fulfills its original function today. In addition to the Immigration Museum, part of it is run by the house “Arsenal of Hope”. Defined as a “welcoming home”, it no longer receives immigrants, but rather homeless people, giving them shelter, food and, above all, support so that they can change their lives. Its entrance is on Dr. Almeida Lima Street, 900 in the Mooca neighborhood, east side of São Paulo.

Every year during the Immigrant Festival (promoted by the Museum) the Arsenal space is used in conjunction with the Immigration Museum, hosting thousands of people.
