The Casa do Tatuapé is a pestle-shaped construction, with six rooms and two attics, which is different from other remaining examples of the colonial period in that it has a roof with only “two waters”.

In the 1698 inventory is the record that proves the construction of the property on a land that had belonged to Father Matheus Nunes de Siqueira, who named Mathias Rodrigues da Silva as administrator of his assets, being the credit of having been the builder of the house. In the mid-nineteenth century, the site began to house a pottery where were exclusively made tiles. However, with Italian immigration, the pottery also started to make bricks. In order for the house to be a residence and then a pottery, water was needed in the vicinity. This fact explains why its implementation was linked to the proximity of a watercourse, a situation that today is not characterized by the rectification of the Tietê river and the channeling of the Tatuapé stream.

In 1945, after the death of its owner, Elias Quartim de Albuquerque, the property was purchased by Tectilagem Textilia. With the allotment of the property, the house was set in a small land, surrounded by other buildings very close. Its current urban situation precludes the understanding of the relations that Casa do Tatuapé originally had with the landscape.

Three decades later Casa do Tatuapé was acquired by the City of São Paulo. Between 1979 and 1980, under the responsibility of the Department of Historical Heritage (DPH), through a project carried out jointly with the Paulista Museum of USP, archaeological research was carried out and, in a second moment, the property underwent restoration works.

The work was done in order to reconstruct some walls that had to be collapsed, as well as the wood and the roof. The balustrade windows and padded doors have also been restored. In order to highlight the characteristics of the time of its construction, the floors were kept in “dirt”.

In 1981 Casa do Tatuapé was opened for public visitation.

In 1991 the property underwent new preservation works, and the following year the Casa do Tatuapé was reopened to the population, housing socio-cultural activities.
