Historical and archaeological records point to tribes of Caquetíos, belonging to the Aruak family, as the first settlers of the island.
Spanish rule was maintained throughout the sixteenth century, when the original inhabitants were transferred to the colony of the Hispaniola island.
Its climate is semi-arid. The highest elevation is the Christoffelberg (Monte Cristóbal) with 374 m. and located in the northwest of the island.
The city of Willemstad is the main port and capital of the island, besides being of the Netherlands Antilles. Its historic area, city center and port, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.
